When evaluating a poker table one of the main considerations is the felt itself. Felts come in many different colors and two mail quality types.
There is generic felt and a special type of felt called speed cloth. You will also hear it referred to as suited speed felt. This is because the felt has the suits etched in as a design pattern. Unsuited speed felt does not have the pattern.
Speed felt is often preferred for use by custom builders and high end poker tables. The main reason for this is the durability and the option to put high end graphics on the felt itself. This felt also repels liquid. If you pour a liquid on the surface it will actually bead up. You can remove the liquid with a paper towel and the felt will go undamaged. When considering the cost of replacing the entire table or upgrading to speed cloth it can be a worth while investment.
Speed felt also allows you to do what is called dye-sublimation. Basically, it is a fancy words that means you can place a picture quality graphic on your table. This is excellent for complex logos or tribute tables. A friend recently put his dog's picture on the table. This can give an otherwise normal table a completely custom look at a fraction of the price.
Another option is to look for a table that has a removable felt. Some tables are designed so that the felt can be replaced if damaged without replacing the entire table.
Felts are just one of the many options to consider when purchasing a poker table. Be sure to ask your retailer or dealer all about these options before you buy your next table.
